A number of years ago I wrote a post to explain Ponte Knit. (pon-tee) I still receive many questions from this post, and I thought it was time to update it.

The brainstorm for writing it back then was a great black pencil skirt. I was quite enamored with it because immediately I noticed there was some “give”. I could actually move and sit comfortably in a pencil skirt. It became a favorite.

So what exactly is ponte? It’s a combination of RAYON, POLYESTER and SPANDEX. For all of you out there who love natural fabrics, you may want to click off of this post right now. Hear me out. Ponte holds its shape because the fabric is tightly woven. It travels well, doesn’t fade and is super comfortable. For some, it may feel too heavy especially in certain climates. I get that. Because of the right combination, and the fact that it does not feel like the poly of the seventies, I consider it to be chic polyester!

Now, nearly a decade later, ponte knit is everywhere and most women have owned several things in this fabrication. With the rage of leggings in recent years, more women started singing the praises of the ease and comfort this fabric brings.

That may lead to your next question. Where do I get it and how will I know it is considered ponte?

Most things will NOT be marked ponte knit, you need to look at the fabric content: Rayon, Polyester and Spandex.

(note the fabric content on the pair below will say viscose (rayon) nylon and elastane)

NYDJ still rates high with clients. This particular pair of pants comes in a straight cut which is hard to find in ponte. It also comes in a plaid version for a more updated look. Extended sizes too!  (I refer to both plus sizes and petites as extended sizes.)

These are the perfect work pants for those who have an office dress code. The straighter cut is feasible for women who do not want something too fitted. I will also say that many of the skinny ponte ankle pants on the market are perceived as “legging- like” by some work places. Unfortunately, conservative offices have not kept up with fashion and it frustrating for women who have to abide by these stricter dress codes.

CeCe actually has a boot-cut style and note the word ponte in the description! We’ve come a long way in the seven years since I wrote this original post.

Vince Camuto is another popular style and yes they are calling them ponte! These are a slimmer cut. I have helped many women purchase this pair, but this cut can seem like a legging to some. It is not! It’s all about body type and the straight and boot cut look great on some body types. Others can do a skinny cut.

Wit and Wisdom has great options and this particular pair has some cotton in the mix. They aren’t truly ponte knit by the above definition, but the new ab-solution waistband is worth checking out. And I love this new updated plaid pair. I tried them on and they were amazingly comfortable. In this pair the rayon has been replaced with cotton!

This is a pair of ponte knit from Cabi a few years ago. Every season they have more choices so definitely check that out too. This picture was an idea for a client on how to dress down all of her work pants for a Csa Tacoma 8" Xt Keen Utility men's qU7wvvon that topic!

Now it’s over to you. Are you a fan of ponte knit? Has it been one of your go-to wardrobe pieces over the years? Will you embrace it more knowing some labels are including some cotton?

We just got back from Tucson where I visited the Chico store there and bought
two so slimming ponte 5 pocket pants; one in black and one in brown. I LOVE THEM.
They have such nice give and even my husband says they look great. I wanted to
get them (I take “short” 2.5s) in the ink color, but they didn’t have them and I couldn’t
find that size online either. Darn! I can’t recommend this fabric enough. I love to
quilt so you KNOW I love cotton – but not on my butt or hips where I need a little
give! By the way the Tucson Chico’s store is the best Chico’s store I’ve ever visited,
just in case you’re in the area.

I have a friend that is a seamstress, and she posted a dress she is making for herself, which she truly deserves seeing all the wonderful things she makes for her business. I had to ask what the material was, and she said ponte knit. I needed to google it of course, it came across your site. You explain it very well. I can’t wait to see her finished product when she models it. Unfortunately I find this fabric combination to thick and warm. Is there any other fabric, that might be lighter, and breath, but still give shape and lift???

I just read your information about Ponte knit. I’ve worn ponte knit for a long time and I’m sure a lot of people too who never knew what fabric the were wearing. It’s great for traveling never wrinkle just to mention just one good point. Give credit when due it’s a great fabric even with the polyester. Ponte knit will be around for a long time to come.

I am at a Cabi party right now & just learned about ponte.
It’s a lovely feeling blend & since I prefer natural fabrics, I was excited to see a coat made with a cotton/nylon/spandex ponte… Excellent!

    Appreciate the info, Karen:
I’m 5′ 10″ – 210 lbs, always looking for comfortable, nice looking + affordable clothing. Just found a boot-cut style Ponte pant at my local Walmart + tried it on because I was curious + the price was fantastic (15.99). Did not want to take it off it fit so well + was super comfy which is rare these days. Been seeing this type of pant on many full size sites but was too chicken to buy one without being able to try it on lol. I thought it would be a great “relax at home” pair of pants but it’s actually like a comfy pair of slacks + looks really nice when paired w a pretty tunic + Dansko clogs. Now that I know this type of fabric construction will actually hold its shape (given the drape of the fabric, I was worried about knee bulges after prolonged sitting), I will buy more for sure. Thank you again.

Hi, I ve been looking everywhere for a pair of ponte, stretchy pants in zip up style, since last year, when I bought 3 pairs from Nordstrom Rack online, . The brand was’ Tractr.’ I have them in tan, grey and midnight blue with a snakeskin panel.. Most comfy pants ever! and very attractive as well. I can’t wear jeans or stiffer fabrics due to a tailbone pain issue… Tractr doesn’t seem to carry them this season. Where can I find more paints of this type. Love them.

I just bought (have not received) a top on sale from The Limited. It looks like a great color of pink (I’m a blond, but I was not sure when it said ponte. Now I hear it is warm, and it is a 1/2 sleeve, which I hoped would be perfect for the mid-seasons and even, especially summer! Now I don’t know if I goofed! Is ponte always warm?? I was hoping for a spandex-type product (not too much spandex!) that would give and be COOL. ???

Do you consider Mulitples Slim-station pants to be Ponte?
They are 76% Rayon, 21% Nylon and 3% Spandex.
